The issues
Our campaign is focused on an ambitious agenda prioritizing issues that are crucial to the residents of Migori County. Below is our 7-point agenda.
Reactivate the Economy
To boost the nation's economy, we must collectively support job creation across various sectors. This includes revitalizing key industries like agriculture and investing in the service industry by leveraging technology to increase employment opportunities for young people.
Promote ease of doing business to attract local and Foreign Direct Investment (FDI).
To enact laws that offer stronger incentives for both local and international investors to support micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), ultimately leading to job creation.
To modernize our labor laws to offer favourable working conditions for women, youth and PWDs so we can effectively compete in the global market.
Streamline Social Economy framework to ensure that we not only focus on profit, but also on social impact as a means to equity.
To offer financial literacy avenues and capacity building that will promote access to alternative community-based credit facilities. These alternative credit facilities include Table Banking groups, SACCOs and Corporatives which protect small business from predetory lending.
At national legislative level, to reduce the national debt and eliminate wasteful government spending.
To promote inclusion in the formal financial sector through Corporatives which have proven to be successfully promote social impact.
Greater public investments in community workforce training, apprenticeship programs and support for small businesses.
To update the consumer protection law to enhance consumer rights across e-commerce, financial services, electricity, and telecommunications.
Streamline Access to Education
Strive for equal emphasis on academics and physical development in schools and colleges to foster well-rounded students. This includes ensuring access to infrustructures in learning institutions to support their personnel in teaching.
Provide public schools with technological resources like computers and internet access, aligning with the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) goals.
Provide transparent access to bursaries and scholarships for the underprivileged in the society.
Partner with local and foreign institutions of higher learning for mutual exchange opportunities.
Promote Sports, Arts and Culture
Propose and support relevant legislation: Sports Act amendments: Advocate for amendments to the Sports Act 2013 to better cater to grassroots sports development, especially for women and girls, and to ensure equitable access to facilities and opportunities. Advocate for stronger laws to protect the intellectual property rights of artists and cultural practitioners, ensuring they benefit from their creations.
Advocate for increased national budget allocation: Lobby the National Treasury and relevant parliamentary committees for greater funding to the Sports, Arts and Social Development Fund and other national initiatives that benefit counties. This directly impacts the resources available for county-level programs.
Gender mainstreaming in policy: Ensure that all national policies related to sports, arts, and culture explicitly include provisions for gender equality, addressing the unique challenges and opportunities for women and girls.
Resource Mobilization and Partnership Building: Utilize the National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF): which can be strategically allocated to projects promoting sports, arts, and culture, particularly those empowering women, youth, and persons with disabilities. Examples include: Funding local sports tournaments and leagues, establishing community arts and cultural centers, supporting training workshops for artists and sports coaches as well as providing grants for cultural groups or sports teams.
Collaborate with the Ministry of Sports, Arts and Culture, Sports Kenya, Kenya Academy of Sports, and cultural institutions like the National Museums of Kenya to bring their programs and resources to the county. Partner with NGOs, CSOs, and private sector entities that focus on youth development, women empowerment, and cultural preservation to leverage their expertise and funding.
Access to Health Services
Champion Health-Related Legislation: Advocate for stronger national and county health policies, increased budgetary allocation for health services affeccting women, youth and PWDs. Improved maternal, child, and reproductive health (MCH/RH) services as well as Sickle Cell Disease diagnosis, management and care.
Raise awareness and promote health literacy among the constituents. This would involve organizing regular health camps, community dialogues, and workshops focusing on preventive healthcare, maternal and child health, sexual and reproductive health, and non-communicable diseases
Champion for the equitable distribution of health facilities and personnel. Many areas in the county, particularly rural and marginalized communities, lack adequate clinics, dispensaries, and trained healthcare professionals.
Facilitate access to essential health commodities and services. This includes working with relevant government agencies and non-governmental organizations to ensure a consistent supply of affordable medicines, family planning commodities, and long-lasting insecticide-treated nets for malaria prevention.
Enviromental Sustainability
Involve intensive community engagement and localized education programs. I will initiate regular "barazas" and town hall meetings specifically focused on environmental issues, translating complex scientific concepts into accessible, actionable information for our residents.
Champion the establishment and strengthening of environmental clubs in every school across Migori. These clubs would not just learn theory but actively participate in practical initiatives like school-based tree nurseries, waste recycling drives, and environmental cleanup campaigns.
Forge strong partnerships with local environmental organizations, community-based groups, faith-based institutions, and relevant county and national government agencies.
Promote and support sustainable practices that also offer economic benefits. For instance, I'd encourage and facilitate the establishment of community-led recycling initiatives, where proper waste segregation could create income opportunities.
Digital Transformation
Support local Micro, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) and agricultural cooperatives to embrace e-commerce and digital marketing.
Encourage innovation through digital entrepreneurship bootcamps and hackathons, connecting budding tech talents with mentors and potential investors, nurturing a vibrant local tech ecosystem.
Advocate for expanded and affordable internet connectivity across all sub-counties, particularly in underserved rural areas.
Transparency and Accountability
Leading by example, I will ensure that the operations of my own office are a beacon of transparency.
Facilitate robust platforms for open communication and public engagement. This includes hosting regular, well-publicized "barazas" and town hall meetings across all sub-counties.
Actively empower citizen oversight and watchdog mechanisms. I would collaborate closely with civil society organizations, community-based groups, and local integrity champions to provide them with the knowledge and tools needed to monitor public expenditure and project execution effectively.
